Hefty Fine Proposed for Referee Attacks
A new piece of proposed legislation would fine anyone who assaults a high school ref in Tennessee. House Bill 398/Senate Bill 378 would fine anyone who causes bodily harm to a sports official up to $5,000 on top of their misdemeanor assault charges. “We support it,” said Henderson Mayor Bobby King. He is with the Southwest Football Officials Association. “People get pretty heated at these games.” The bill applies to games sponsored by schools, effecting games involving grades 6th through 12th. “I don’t see why you wouldn’t support it,” said Henderson resident Todd Martin. “If they do the crime, they should pay for it.” If the bill is adopted, it will be put into effect July 1.
