Diaz promoted to Mariners
JACKSON, Tenn — The Jackson Generals relief pitcher, Edwin Diaz has been called up to the Seattle Mariners organization.
The move was made early Saturday afternoon and Diaz will be dressing with the Mariners Saturday night when they take on the Texas Rangers, in Arlington.
Diaz bagan the season as a starter but was moved to the relief role in May. Since the switch, Diaz has not allowed an earned run in a little over 11 innings of work. He’s given up just three hits, walked two while striking out 16.
The 22 year old is from Puerto Rico, and was drafted by the Mariners back in 2012.
With this move, this is the first Generals player since 2010 to be promoted straight from Jackson to Seattle. Catcher Guillermo Quiroz, was the last player to do so.
Diaz marks the 61st player to debut in the majors after the Generals became an affiliate of the Mariners back in 2007.
He will be taking Cody Martin’s roster spot, who has been assigned to AAA, in Tacoma.
