Tennessee Education Lottery Educator of the Week: Kendra Cooke

CROCKETT COUNTY, Tenn. — This week’s Educator of the Week presented by the Tennessee Education Lottery is spotlighted from Maury City Elementary School.

Kendra Cooke“I’ve taught everything from first grade to fourth, and math just became my niche,” Kendra Cooke said.

She is a first grade math teacher and has been teaching for eight years.

“I love that math is a definite thing. They get the answer and they can understand, and if they don’t, we can find a new strategy to figure out the answer,” Cooke said. “It’s just a fun subject to teach.”

Cooke said it’s easy to cherish the memories she makes during class.

“I’ve got a little notebook that I keep, that I write down funny things that have happened. I just look forward to every new year because they’re so wonderful.”

She said some days can be a challenge but that she is constantly working to be the best she can for her students.

“Every single night, I go home and I think about what I can do better for them or maybe what I did not do as well that I can improve upon,” Cooke said.Screen Shot 2016-08-16 at 2.48.05 PM

Cooke’s nominator said her smile is infectious and her personality brightens the days of her students.

“I couldn’t have picked a better profession as far as the kids that I work with and the adults. I mean, it’s just so life enhancing. It’s just wonderful.”

Cooke will now be eligible for the statewide Tennessee Education Lottery Educator of the Month award.
