The American dream of owning a home could become a reality for a half-dozen low-income families in Gibson and Crockett Counties. The special opportunities are being made available through the Affordable Housing Community Development Corporation in Jackson.
Affordable Housing Executive Director Lisa Dawson said since the non-profit started in 1994, it has assisted more than 300 low-income Madison County families move into their first homes. Dawson is excited about expanding AHCDC's reach into Gibson and Crockett counties. "We have been in contact with many Gibson County [and Crockett County] residents that are working toward home ownership, and we just think it's a wonderful opportunity," Dawson said.
Dawson said through a Tennessee Housing Development Agency grant, Affordable Housing can offer income-eligible residents almost $15,000 to help pay for a home. "If they're a first time home buyer and looking to either build a new home or to purchase a home that needs a little updating, they can get up to $14,999 in grant assistance," Dawson said.
Dawson said citizens in both counties can determine if they are income-eligible by visiting the AHCDC website at http://www.affordablehousing.tn.org/tn-housing-home-grant.htm or by attending one of two home buyer orientation courses. They group will host meetings in Jackson on Wednesday and in Trenton at the UT Extension office on Manufacturer's Row on Thursday.
According to the Department of Housing and Urban Development a household of four would be eligible for AHCDC assistance with a maximum income of $38,000. In Crockett County, the maximum income for a four-person family would be $37,050.
To find out more about the orientation courses or income eligibility contact the Affordable Housing office at (731) 422-1366.
