Investigators in Alcorn County, Mississippi are still trying to identify the body of a woman who floated up on the banks of the Tuscumbia River on Sunday afternoon.

Harrison Childs considers Alcorn County a good place to live. "This is a place we live and raise our family and this is the type of thing we do not like to have happen here," said Childs.

That is why Childs and others still cannot believe someone found a body floating in a nearby river. "We found a white female floating face down," said Alcorn County Sheriff's Department Investigator Jerry Rogers.

According to the Alcorn County Sheriff's Department, a hunter saw the body floating in some brush near a boat dock on County Road 750 around 12 p.m. Sunday afternoon. "She was wearing a red long sleeve t-shirt, Levi blue jeans, and white new balance tennis shoes," said Rogers.

Investigators said they are not quite sure how long the body was floating in the river, but they did say it could have been 24 hours or as long as a week.

Deputies still do not know what happened to the woman, or how she ended up in the river. "Until the autopsy is performed, we have no idea if this an accident, foul play, suicide, or anything," said Rogers.

Childs believes part of Alcorn County is dangerous. "I do not come down a lot at night through here because you know anything can happen in this remote area," said Childs.

Until deputies find out what happened, members of the community plan to stay on alert.

Investigators said they have some new leads and hoped to identify the body by tomorrow morning.
