2008 Dodge Dakota Preview

Dodge has restyled and refined the Dakota pickup for the
2008 model year. The new truck, which makes its world debut at the 2007 Chicago
auto show, gets more power, a new exterior look, and a new interior.
Under its chiseled new look - which Chrysler says owes a debt to the new Nitro
SUV - the Dakota's 4.7-liter V-8 gets its horsepower uprated by 25 percent to
290 hp. Torque rises ten percent to 320 pound-feet. All this comes with an
increase in fuel economy, Chrysler reports, and with the added bonus of E85
flex-fuel capability.
A 3.7-liter V-6 engine remains available. Dakotas can be had with a five-speed
automatic (V-8s); a six-speed automatic (V-6 engines except for Laramie trim
versions); or a four-speed automatic. A remote starter is a standard features on
all powertrains this year.

As for the bluff-faced new exterior, Chrysler says the new
hood, grille, front and rear ends, and headlamps are styled to fit better with
the Dodge lineup. Even the tailgate gets a spoiler for a tougher look and a
small fuel-economy improvement.
Inside, the Dakota sports a new instrument panel and console. A new
under-rear-seat storage system increases the amount of cubby space in the cabin.
A cargo management system with collapsible plastic dividers comes on each
Dakota, too, as does a new storage bin above the glovebox. The center console
has molded-in storage for an MP3 player like the Caliber hatchback, along with
an extra power point. And the MP3 player of your choice can be plugged into a
new range of audio systems that offer Sirius satellite radio, or even a DVD
navigation system.
The new Dakota arrives on dealer lots this August.
