2008 Saturn Vue Preview

General Motors says the new 2008 Saturn Vue gets a European flair in its second generation - along with more features, drivetrain options and safety than most of its competition.

Saturn executives also confirmed that the brand will offer a plug-in hybrid version of the new Vue in the near future, to be preceded by a two-mode hybrid version of the new crossover. The plug-in version could effectively double the Vue's gas mileage, brand chief Jill Lajdziak told audiences at the Los Angeles auto show.

The new 2008 Saturn Vue made its public debut at the 2006 Los Angeles auto show, and goes on sale in the second quarter of 2007.

Saturn says four models of the new Vue will be forthcoming, starting with XE, XR and Red Line Vues. A new version of the Vue Green Line hybrid will emerge later in the 2008 model year.

Very close in execution to the PreVue concept shown earlier in 2006 at the New York auto show, the 2008 Vue will offer a range of powertrains within its four models. The XE with front-wheel drive and the Vue Green Line will come with a 164-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder mated to a four-speed automatic. The XE also gets a five-speed manual option in 2008. Vue XEs with all-wheel drive get a 215-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 engine.

Further up the performance ladder, the Vue XR and Vue Red Line models will be powered by a 250-hp, 3.6-liter V-6 with variable valve timing. All the V-6 Vues get six-speed automatic transmissions.

GM promises European handling along with the Vue's sophisticated new styling. The suspension is independent all around, with anti-roll bars and an engine cradle for handling and noise and vibration isolation.

Safety equipment includes standard anti-lock brakes, stability and traction control, and curtain airbags, as well as one year of basic OnStar service.

Standard and optional features include power seats; an MP3-capable audio system; automatic climate control; and remote starting.
