Educator of the Week - Hendon

Laura Bannon

PARIS, Tenn. - W.G. Rhea Elementary School first grade teacher, Melanie Hendon loves the responsibility of being an educator.

Hendon explains her favorite part of her day. "Watching the kids light up whenever they learn something when, when I introduce something and see their excitement. I just really enjoy creating the excitement in them."

Coming from a large family and having a child of her own, she said she has had a passion for wanting to nurture and teach children for a long time.

"The way they depend on me and we create the sense of family. We all help each other out and one takes care of the other. We all have a job to do and much like a family, we all work together to get something done together," said Hendon.

Teaching a classroom full of 6 and 7-year-olds, she said there is a never a dull moment.

"No one told me first grade was the hardest grade to teach, but it's a challenge that I take. I'm teaching them to read, add, and subtract, all the skills that will be built on in the future grades," Hendon said.

Hendon tells WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News that she always has open arms.

"I do try to make it to their basketball games, any of their extracurricular activities. I have tutored outside of the classroom. Basketball and football, I try to go to as many of those as I can."
