JACKSON, Tenn. -- Sara Dorris teaches 8th grade english at I.B. Tigrett Middle School in Jackson.

Dorris grew up in Jackson and attended Union University. She started teaching almost 10 years ago.

“When I was at Union my sophomore year at school, I was going in a completely other major,” said Dorris. “I just felt that this is my role. This is my job in life to invest in these children.”

Dorris loves teaching, but admits the job comes with challenges. “It sounds a little cliché, but just a passion for it and you just come back because the children are more important than all those challenges.”

After school Dorris coaches cheerleading. She cheered in high school and took over the team at Tigrett five years ago. “I just enjoyed the program and want to give the girls an opportunity to plug into somewhere else and have a good program before they get to high school,” she said.

Dorris says the best thing about teaching is her students. She said, “Just being involved with them and being invested with them in their lives.”

Dorris says she enjoys seeing students get excited about material in class.
