BREAKING: Woman Found Dead in Burned Car in East Jackson
EAST JACKSON, Tenn. -- Jackson police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a woman's early morning death in a car fire.
Investigators confirm Taliesha Souter, 25, of Jackson was found dead in a fully engulfed car in the 700 block of Whitehall St., in the parking lot of Greater Community Temple of Deliverance.
"This is someone's child, she may be a mother, I know she's somebody's child that love her and our prayers go out to the family," Rodney Miller said, a deacon and usher at the church.
A 1983 Chevrolet Caprice was in the wood line and fully engulfed in flames. A 27-year-old Jackson man was at the scene and told officers that his girlfriend was in the burning car. The Jackson Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire.
"This is the first time any kind of thing like this has every happened, someone met their demise at our church," Miller said.
The man was transported by ambulance to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital, where he was treated for burns and released. Residents say they heard sirens all Sunday morning.
"We like jumped up to look out the door but we didn't. We heard them but we didn't see them pass by," Destiny Sanders said, an East Jackson resident.
A county medical examiner and police investigators were on the scene. The woman's body was transported to the state Medical Examiner's Office in Nashville for an autopsy.
According to investigators, Souter was driving and her boyfriend was in the front passenger's seat. They were the only two people in the car.
Police say the man was carrying an uncovered container of gasoline in his lap. Souter attempted to light a cigarette, and the gas ignited and caused the fire.
"I have children around her age as well you know, I would just...I can only feel their pain right now," Miller said.
The car then left the roadway. The man was able to get out while the car was still moving, and Souter remained in the driver's seat. The car continued on until it stopped where first responders found it.
