Battling Back Pain

If you've spent a long week at your computer, you probably already have it---back pain.

Back pain is one of the most common medical problems, affecting 8 out of 10 people at some point in their lives. It can be a dull, constant ache or a sudden, sharp pain. Either way, there's help from the American Council on Exercise.

If you're tied to your desk all week...start by taking a good look at your chair. Try to use one designed with back support...or place a small pillow or rolled up towel behind you to fill the space.

Beyond support, make sure your chair can swivel. It keeps you from having to twist and turn, which puts pressure on your back.

Finally, be mindful of the way you sit. Try to sit up straight and avoid leaning in as much as possible. But when you have to lean, do so from your hips.

If your back pain is severe or doesn't improve after three days, you should call your doctor.
