Eating Speed and Weight

Researchers asked 70 people to eat lunch in a special kitchen for 2 days. Half of them were normal-weight- the other half overweight or obese.

The participants were given the same meal, and asked to eat it under different conditions each day...

First they were instructed to take small bites, chew thoroughly, and pause and put the spoon down between bites.

Next, they were told they were under time constraints and should take large bites, chew quickly and not pause or put the spoon down.

The researchers collected data on caloric intake, as well as feelings of hunger and fullness before and after the meals.

The results normal-weight people ate significantly fewer calories during the slow meal compared to the fast meal, but there was no statistical difference in the overweight and obese group based on eating speed.

The researchers say this may be because the overweight and obese subjects ate less food than normal-weight subjects during both tests possibly because they were more self-conscious.

The study did find some similarities though both groups reported less hunger an hour after the slow meal compared to the fast meal. And both groups drank more water during the slow meal.
