16th Annual Fiddlestick Extravaganza

In Greenfield, Wednesday night church services were held in an unexpected place, downtown. That is because the 16th Annual Fiddlestick Extravaganza kicked off Wednesday afternoon along Front Street with a community wide church service that night.

The Extravaganza, which includes free carnival rides and, of course, fiddlesticks and carnival rides, runs through Saturday night. Most of the entertainment is free, thanks to sponsorships by local businesses.

Though the event is named for a favorite ice cream treat, organizers say it is about a whole lot more. "The greatest things about this festival is it's like a homecoming," said James Pope, co-owner of the Fiddlestick Extravaganza. "People come back every year. They eat and have a good time."

Fiddlesticks have been made in Greenfield since 1924. This year's Extravaganza is in memory of the late Jimmy Pope, the son of one of the Fiddlestick founders.
