7-month-old dies from possible child abuse
BENTON COUNTY, Tenn. -- A 7-month-old boy is dead after the child's mother and her boyfriend pulled over and called for help on the way to a Camden hospital, according to the Benton County Sheriff's Office.
Three children have been taken from the mother's custody in the past, according to the sheriff's office.
"His life hadn't even begun and it's already gone," one Benton County resident said. "As a mother and a grandmother I think that' frightening."
The child had signs of injury, and authorities are currently investigating whether child abuse is involved, according to the sheriff's office. The sheriff's department has requested an autopsy for the child.
The sheriff's department received a call at around 8:30 a.m. from the mother and boyfriend, who were on their way to Camden and had pulled over about 6 miles from the hospital to make the call. EMS took the child to Camden General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at around 9:30 a.m., according to the sheriff's office.
Benton County Sheriff, Tony King, says Camden General Hospital staff tried to revive the child
"I've never seen so many people working on one person," Sheriff King said. "They did everything they could do."
No charges have been filed, and the mother and boyfriend are being interviewed this afternoon, according to the sheriff's department.
The mother and her boyfriend have a history of domestic disturbances at their home and were in court a few weeks ago, according to the sheriff's office.
The Benton County Sheriff's Office and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations are investigating the case.
