JACKSON, Tenn.- West Tennessee residents honored Veterans with sneakers, t-shirts and a little exercise in the Veteran 4-K run at the YMCA center, Sunday.

"It brings back memories of my self being in the military and my family being in the military," said Veteran Mark Watson. "I know what it's like to be away from your family at Thanksgiving and Christmas. It just makes me remember how important it really is, how our freedom is just so valuable."

Residents said they were running to show their appreciation for all of the men and women who have served and continue to serve in the military.

"It says they care for somebody who has fought in a a war or something it's just a small part of what we can do to give back to them," said Veteran Danny Hargett.

Officials with the YMCA said all of the event's proceeds will go towards program scholarships for families who are struggling financially.

Veterans said Veterans Day is also an opportunity to take a moment to honor their lost loved ones.

"I was fortunate enough to serve and come home to start a good life but it's all thanks to the people that gave their lives," said Hargett.

Officials said there are more than 500,000 veterans living in Tennessee.
