City officials took to the streets of Jackson this week, conducting their annual neighborhood sweep.

The neighborhood Services Department, along with the police, fire and street departments were in the 800 block of Old Hickory Boulevard to make sure homes were up to standards with city codes. Their mission is to work with residents to improve the street appearance of their homes.

"Once they see us making things happen that are positive in their neighborhoods, they begin to start wanting to work with us," said Sylvester Bingham, a code compliance inspector for the city of Jackson. "We're getting a lot of calls now from people letting us know what violations are in their neighborhoods. Interior furniture sitting outside, such as couches, living room chairs, washer and dryers, things of that nature. And then a misunderstanding of storage, people don't understand that carports cannot be used as outside storage."

Assistance will be given to those individuals who have circumstances that prevent them from being in compliance with the City of Jackson's ordinances.
