Council Approves Mutual Assistance Agreement between JPD and U of M

JACKSON, Tenn. – Some additional police officers now will be able to enforce the law and assist Jackson police.

At its meeting Tuesday morning, the Jackson City Council approved a mutual assistance agreement between city police and The University of Memphis Lambuth Campus police officers.

The agreement will allow University of Memphis officers to have jurisdiction on the campus and nearby streets as well as the rest of the city if needed.

"Without such an agreement we only have jurisdiction on the campus property and the continuous streets so this allows us to go a block or two farther out whatever might be necessary to help keep the University safe and to work with the Jackson P.D.” said Bruce Harber, Director of Police for the University of Memphis.

There are currently three University of Memphis officers that patrol the Lambuth campus. Each are sworn officers who have completed academy training.
