Crash Kills One in Hardeman County
TOONE, Tenn. - A Hardeman County man is dead and two hurt, after a dump truck collided with a SUV.
Part of Highway 18 was shut down for several hours from the wreck, as crews worked to pull one of the vehicles out of a ravine.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol said an SUV crossing over Highway 18, struck a dump truck as it was trying to get to Highway 138.
The THP said the driver told troopers she did not see the truck coming before she crossed over.
"I saw the traffic building up and I was wondering, just who was involved and did I know them, and I was saddened to think, even though I didn't know them, that someone was in a wreck," said Edwina Kirk, who lives near the scene of the crash.
Troopers said the passenger in the dump truck Paul Filsinger, 22, was killed after the truck flipped on its side, and into the ravine.
Investigators said the driver of the dump truck and SUV were taken to the hospital, but have since been released.
Kimberly Bailey lives nearby the scene.
"There have been several small wrecks, but nothing like this," Bailey said.
Family members said Filsinger was a great father to two young children, and will greatly be missed.
Residents said drivers need to be careful when taking these rural roads.
"The roads, they are hilly. They are curvy," Bailey said. "You can be on a stop sign before you know it, and if you don't know where you are at, you could possibly end up in a highway before you have time to stop yourself."
And they said drivers need to slow down.
The THP said the cause of the wreck remains under investigation.
