JACKSON, Tenn.- Visitors to East Elementary School were welcomed to the schools Black History Month program for this year.
The school's choir performed a number of songs while students did several readings including poems and other passages about some leader of civil rights.
The featured speaker was Dr. Charles Clark, assistant principal and testing coordinator at North Side High School.
"We have a speaker who will come and encourage our children and to remind them that they are important and each child has a gift," said Avis Baxter, a 3rd grade teacher at East Elementary School. "We want them to tap into that gift and use that gift which will help them to become the best they can be in every thing that they do."
School leaders said Black History is taught every month of the year, not just during Black History Month.
