Exceptionally expensive campaigns in latest Madison County Sheriff's race

WEST JACKSON -- This past Madison County sheriff's race went down in history as one of the county's most expensive elections.

Republican John Mehr reportedly spent $193,422.48 for his winning campaign. He won the election with 54 percent of the vote -- or 10,851 votes. That boils down to $17.83 per vote he received.

Independent candidate Rick Staples spent $99,831.57 on his campaign. He received 9,222 -- or 46 percent -- of the votes. Overall, $10.82 was spent per vote.

The cost per vote is calculated by the total amount each candidate spent on their campaigns, divided by their total number of votes.

Both candidates turned in their latest financial disclosure reports on July 31 to the Madison County Election Commission.
