JACKSON, Tenn.- The Jackson Exchange Club honored one of Madison County's bravest, Tuesday.

Lt. Shane Barnes of the Madison County Fire Department was awarded the club's Firefighter of the Year honor. Barnes is a 23-year veteran of the volunteer department. His day job is with Jackson Backhoe and Plumbing.

The father and husband was recognized for what the chief calls calm determination, skillful teamwork and sheer courage in the face of danger.

Recognition for bravery is something that runs in the blood for the Barnes family.

"My grandfather won this award. He was Police Officer of the Year in 1973, from the same organization, so it's just an honor to win 40 years later," said Lt. Shane Barnes, Firefighter of the Year.

Today was also proclaimed as "Lt. Shane Barnes Day" throughout Madison county.
