JACKSON, Tenn. - The recent cold snap has many people gathering their warm blankets and heaters to keep warm, but heaters are also working over time.

As a result, local experts have issued a few warnings. Never cover a stand alone heater and make sure to keep your heater level to reduce the risk of tipping over.

Safety officials also said make sure to have carbon monoxide detectors especially of you are using a gas or propane heater.

"Early in the year we actually set up something making people aware of the time has come its getting cold outside help prevent and keep your family safe using these two items," said Reco Watson.

Watson says a carbon monoxide detector is used just like a smoke detector and will alert you if the gas is inside your home.
