The 143rd academic year for a Chester County campus is off to a great start with its first day of classes.
It was set in motion with the 12th annual Tolling of the Bell.

Students, staff and faculty gathered on campus and watched as Dr. J. Walker Whittle, Vice President Emeritus, served as Master of the Bell.

Officials of the Church of Christ-supported school said the bell ringing was a way to show appreciation for the prestigious and rich heritage of the school.

"I think we're seeing a lot more involvement early on from parents," said Dr. Joe Wiley, President of Freed-Hardeman University. "That is encouraging their preparation for college, the demands of college level work are far greater than they used to be. The demands of the technology, the demands for the student to be able to research."

Enrollment at the university in Henderson is just over 2,000.
