It has been a long, hard recovery for Chief Bobby Pate of McKenzie since his motorcycle wreck on April 16, but family members said he is now making progress at a rehab hospital.

7 Eyewitness News spoke with Chief Pate's son, Joel who is also in law enforcement. He said his father is enduring a lot of pain from his fractured back and ribs, but is keeping his spirits high thanks to support from the community.

Chief Pate is going through rehab at Vanderbilt Stallworth Rehab Hospital working on building strength in order to walk and function normally.

Although his crash is still being investigated Joel Pate said his father is starting to recall more about the night he wrecked.

"He remembers another vehicle coming into his lane of traffic and pushing him off into the grass median in the center of the divided road," said Joel Pate.

Pate told 7 Eyewitness News it is not clear at this point how long the chief's recovery will take.
