Former Olympic Swimmer Encourages JCS Students
JACKSON, Tenn.-A former Olympic Swimmer is now living and working here in Jackson.
Gil Stovall was a member of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team.
He spoke to students at Jackson Christian School.
The Memphis native is now the head coach of Jackson Gators Swimming. He began swimming at the age of five.
In 2008 Stovall qualified for the Olympics in China in the 200 Meter Butterfly. He had the second fastest qualifying time behind Michael Phelps.
A stomach virus the morning of his swim in China kept him from winning a medal.
"My goal here in Jackson is to raise awareness in swimming and get exposure and help it become a sport that is very respected and like it is in the rest of the world. It requires a lot of hard work and dedication and training," said Stovall.
