GIBSON COUNTY, Tenn.- Gibson County Deputies are investigating the death of two people near the Skullbone community.

Deputies were called to a residence off of George Butler Road, Saturday evening, after a family member discovered Henry and Betty Smith inside the home unresponsive from apparent gunshot wounds.

"It's a small tight knit community and for something to happen like this its a shock," said neighbor Regina O'Mahony. "They were married 50-something years and would help anybody."

Investigators said the Smith's preliminary autopsy reports are pending but no suspects are being considered at this time.

"There are so many unanswered questions right now and that's what is disturbing me the most. He would help anyone in need, they were a very sweet couple," said O'Mahony. "Very much in love, she was worried about him more than herself and vice versa, they did everything together."

Neighbors told WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News the couple were prominent members of the community who played a big role in their local church. Loved ones said the investigation into their death is hard to believe.

"It's got me pretty much in a state of shock yesterday was a very emotional day for me," said O'Mahony. "They were both very loved and they will be missed."

Deputies said once the autopsies are completed the case is expected to be closed.

"It's hard to drive by that house down there not knowing what happened," said neighbor Tony Hurner.
