BROWNSVILLE, Tenn.-Governor Bill Haslam was in Haywood County Wednesday to announce new state funds to help makeover downtown Brownsville.

Several people gathered to meet with the governor as he handed over a check for more than $500,000. That Money will go toward improving the look of the downtown area, along East Main Street.

Officials said the project will replace old sidewalks and add decorative street lighting.

"Anytime we can take a small amount of local funding and multiply that by a factor of 4 or 5 times by getting the state funding, it just helps out local tax dollars go so much further in making those very, very much needed improvements," said Brownsville Mayor Jo Matherne.

Officials said the grant is administered by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.
