Hardin Co. Sex Offender Jailed; Accused of Playing Santa
HARDIN COUNTY, Tenn. - The owner of Double D's Wholesale, Dave Huffman said he was blindsided by who his volunteer Santa Claus turned out to be.
"I didn't know he was a sex offender before this. If I would have known that, he would of never played Santa Claus," said Huffman.
Huffman said he knew the man as a customer, but did not know about his criminal history.
"He's just a nice old man, he comes with his wife and he comes to the auction he helps with the girls when they need coffee or whatever he volunteers for doing all kinds of stuff," said Huffman.
The Hardin County Sheriff's Department arrested Clarence Shivlie on January 16th for violating the sex offender law. The Tennessee sex offender registry shows Shivlie was arrested in 1997 on two counts of criminal sexual conduct.
"Someone failed they didn't check his background out someone failed," said Betty Ross.
According to the affidavit, Shivlie dressed up as a Santa Clause for a Christmas party at the warehouse where he supposedly had multiple children under the age of 18 sitting on his lap.
Huffman said he received no complaints from the more than 100 people celebrating the holiday.
"I'm more afraid of the drug addicts and the murderers that are coming around here then I am Clarence in my opinion I think he's getting a raw deal."
Shivlie is scheduled to appear in Hardin County General Sessions court on February 12. Shivlie was released from jail after he posted $10,000 bond.
