Illinois Accident Kills Two West Tennesseans
SCOTTS HILL, Tenn. - Authorities are investigating an accident that killed two West Tennessee pedestrians.
The accident happened Wednesday on Interstate 57 North in Illinois.
Illinois State Police said Jimmy Westbrook, 58, of Brownsville, broke down on the northbound shoulder, after losing a tire on his vehicle.
Police said as he got out of his car to retrieve the tire, he was fatally hit by a car.
Investigators said a Good Samaritan, Jack Douglas, 80, of Scotts Hill, stopped to help Westbrook since he was lying in traffic.
They said as Douglas crossed the roadway to get his phone to call for help, he too was fatally hit by a car.
Douglas' family members told WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News they were not surprised to hear he was trying to help someone, even if it was somebody he did not know.
"He helped everyone that he ever came in contact with," said Teresa Fields, Douglas' sister. "He was just all about helping people, but he never talked about it. When you hear the stories, they're always coming from someone else about him."
Fields said funeral services will be held for her brother at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Jacks Creek Church.
She said Reed's Chapel in Scotts Hill is doing the services.
