JACKSON, Tenn.- The Jackson Fire Department is helping city residents to stay safe from fires.

To do that, they are giving away 100 free smoke detectors. Fire experts said they are the first line of defense in keeping you and your family safe.

The department will install the detectors for free. Investigators said 90 percent of fire fatalities are in homes without smoke detectors.

"We are not even asking if it's rental property or not. Your landlord is supposed to put it up. If you live in rental property, we will still put up,"
said Fire Marshal Wayne Arnold of the Jackson Fire Department.
