JACKSON, Tenn. - Jackson Police are investigating the death of a Denmark, TN man after residents found a dead body laying in a roadway.

Investigators said Antwan Brooks, 35, was found severely beaten in front of his friend's home around 1:30 Sunday morning. Police said Brooks was then taken by ambulance to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators said Brooks suffered trauma to his head, which rules this case as a homicide investigation. " This is a 35 year old man who according to his family was in good health and for him to be found dead in the street with trauma leads us to believe he was killed," said Lt. Tyreece Miller, Jackson Police.

Debra Mickens who is a family friend of Brooks and lives where his body was found said finding her friend face down covered in blood will haunt her forever. " He was trying to raise up, he just didn't have anymore strength," said Mickens, " I was looking down at him trying to see and it's like he just took his last breath right then."

Mickens said she noticed Brooks was only wearing a T-shirt and boxers. Friends said they later discovered the victim's pants draped over a neighboring basketball goal. "He didn't deserve that, " said Mickens," I just want to know why."

Friends told 7 Eyewitness News that Brooks was strong, sweet and family oriented. Investigators said they believe the attack was not provoked. " This man lost his life, he was over there and from what we've uncovered he wasn't involved in any criminal activity, he was just over there visiting." said Lt. Miller.

Several residents said they were scared of the neighborhood and ready to move away. " I'm just not going to be able to stay here," said Mickens.

Right now Jackson police said they have made no arrests.
