JACKSON, Tenn. – A West Tennessee physician is accused of assaulting an employee at the Jackson-Madison County General Hospital Cath-Lab after a procedure.

According to court documents, Dr. Nirav Patel allegedly assaulted a cath-lab technician on April 10. Dr. Patel allegedly approached the technician from behind and put his hands around her neck. When the woman spun around in her chair to tell Dr. Patel to remove his hands from her neck, he reportedly began yelling at the woman.

"We take this matter very seriously," said Lt. Tyreece Miller of the Jackson Police Department. "During the course of the allegations we determined that he did in fact assault the lady."

The warrant stated that a witness saw Dr. Patel yell at the woman and put his hands around her neck. The witness stated that Dr. Patel yelled at the woman saying, “If I tell you to do something, you do it.”

Patel's lawyer, William Massey, said that, following the procedure, Dr. Patel touched the alleged victim's shoulder in frustration. Massey went on to say that the situation is embarrassing and shocking to Dr. Patel and his family and nothing like this has ever happened to him before.

Dr. Patel appeared in Jackson City Court, Friday morning. He was released from the Madison County Jail on his own recognizance. His next court date is scheduled for June 6.
