Jackson State Community College hosted a series of seminars and musical performances called, "The Soldier's Song."

The event was held to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Shiloh. Musical performances use songs from the Civil War era along with songs that have been written or co-written by Daniel Johnson and Wood Newton.

Instruments that were used during the Civil War were also used during the performance. Organizers said the show is a celebration of the music of the American Civil War.

"They get a sense of what it's like from the soldier's point of view not all the general's and all this, this is from the point of view the songs they would have sung in camp," said program founder, Wood Newton.

Seminars will also be held Saturday afternoon at the McWherter Center at JSCC. Tickets are $10 per person and can be purchased at the door.
