Kidnap-Slaying Suspect Kills Himself; 2 Girls OK

By Associated Press

Authorities in northern Mississippi who tracked down a fugitive accused of kidnapping two girls and killing their mother and older sister say they repeatedly ordered him to surrender, but he instead pulled out a pistol and shot himself in the head.

Adam Mayes was later pronounced dead and the two sisters - 12-year-old Alexandria Bain and 8-year-old Kyliyah Bain - were rescued Thursday, ending a nearly two-week search that began when Jo Ann Bain and her three daughters disappeared from their Tennessee home.

Aaron T. Ford, special agent in charge of the FBI's Memphis office, says Mayes and the girls were found in a densely wooded area after authorities got a tip.

He says the girls were found safe and were hospitalized as a
precaution.

Sara Burnett, a spokeswoman for Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis, said 12-year-old Alexandria Bain and 8-year-old Kyliyah Bain were treated and released from the hospital early Friday.

Burnett said she didn't have details on their conditions, but law enforcement officers said the girls were suffering from exposure, dehydration and poison ivy after they were rescued Thursday in northern Mississippi.
