JACKSON, Tenn. - Most West Tennesseans spent Thanksgiving day off the job. But for some, Thursday was anything but a day off.

At the Madison County Sheriff's Department, there were fewer people than usual in the building. But it was still business as usual despite the holiday. Dispatchers and deputies agree being away from their families on days like these is not fun but necessary. They understand their jobs are required 24-hours a day, 7-days a week. "It would be a little different, if I was here all alone," said Dispatcher Don McIntosh. "But we've got each other to talk with when it's not too busy."

It was not just dispatchers and officers who worked through Thanksgiving. All first responders were on the job, as were hospital staff and many folks who work at places like convenience stores and grocery stores and newsrooms too.
