DYER, Tenn. - Family and friends are mourning after 29-year-old Jon Adam Carroll is killed.

"It was bad," Carroll's friend Brittany Thompson said. "Nobody saw it coming of course, but it hurt a lot of people. I still can't believe it."

Family members said Carroll was stabbed in his yard Wednesday night and later died in the hospital. Police arrested Jeremy Cole and charged him with second degree murder, but neither officers nor family are saying what might have led to the violent encounter.

"There's not a big crime rate around here, and you don't here much stuff like this happening at all," family friend Chesley Scobey said.

Friends said Carroll was in the process of moving to Kenton with his girlfriend and was anticipating the birth of a little boy next month.

"Last time I talked to him, I told him I was proud of him, that he would be a great dad," Brittany Thompson said.

"All he wanted to do was be there for that baby," friend Olivia Thompson said. "He just wanted to be a father, and he wanted to be there for his son."

Family said Carroll's life was taken far too early, but now they will try their best to pick up the pieces.

"He had lots of friends and his family and his daddy," Olivia Thompson said. "My heart hurts most for his daddy because I know how much his daddy meant to him and I know how much his daddy cared for him."

Jeremy Cole is being held at the Gibson County jail in lieu of $250,000 bond. His first court appearance will be next Tuesday.
