WEAKLEY CO., Tenn.- MTD Consumer group announced Monday it would be expanding its facility and adding 225 new jobs to the northwest Tennessee area.

"This is very good news," said Martin Mayor Randy Brundige. "For us, it will put some people back to work that hasn't had a job for sometime."

MTD, which manufactures outdoor equipment, has been a fixture in the Martin community for 25 years. Workers for MTD says this is good for them too. They feel it means the company is stable.

"It's great they are hiring people and not laying people off," said Kara Havrila, who has worked for the company for 15 years.

The 225 new jobs will happen over a 5 year period. Mayor Brundige told WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News that 145 of those will be open as soon as the expansion is finished in November.

The factory jobs are expected to pay around 13 to 15 dollars an hour.

"In a rural area it's tough to bring good paying jobs to the community," said Brundige.

MTD has already began the expansion process. The company has not said how or when people can start applying for the new positions.
