A motorcycle wreck has landed a West Tennessee police chief in the hospital with severe injuries.

Chief Bobby Pate of McKenzie was on his way to conduct an escort for a Bethel University team, when he apparently ran off the road into the median around 9 p.m. Monday night on Highway 22 in McKenzie.

No other vehicles were involved.

Chief Pate was taken to Vanderbilt Medical Center with several broken ribs, neck and back injuries, and some head trauma.

Hospital officials said Pate underwent surgery Tuesday afternoon.

"We want him and his family to know that we are 100 percent behind his recovery. He has our prayers and our support everyday," said McKenzie Mayor Jill Holland.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is investigating what caused the chief's motorcycle to veer off the road.
