McNairy County Fire Investigated as Arson

BETHEL SPRINGS, Tenn. -- A New Year's Day fire destroyed a house on Buena Vista Rd., in McNairy county.

Rebecca Mayo, a relative of the woman who lived here, is still in shock that the fire is being investigated as arson.

"It just breaks my heart to see it gone," Mayo said.

The fire started around 6:30 Wednesday night. Mayo who watched the home burn, says the house has been in her family for more than 70 years.

"It just literally made me sick, made me sick seeing my grandparents and brothers home," Mayo said.

Investigators say the flames came from two different spots inside the living room and that's what made them label the fire suspicious.

"We do have a person of interest that we're gonna be interviewing in relation to this fire," Investigator Robert Hitchborn, McNairy County Sheriff's Dept.

Mayo, who says she spent countless summers at the house, says she doubts the home will be rebuilt.

"She is definitely a survivor, she will land on her feet miraculously, she always does," Mayo said.

Two dogs were killed in the fire but no one else was injured.

The woman and her two children are staying at a hotel.
