The Jackson Madison County Metro Narcotic Unit spent the Saturday morning and afternoon helping to rid area homes of old prescriptions.

Organizers held "Operation Take It Back" at the Jackson Fairgrounds where residents dropped off out of date or unwanted medications.

Officials said disposing the pills correctly will not only help prevent opportunities for prescription drug abuse, but it will protect local water systems and the environment.

"I think that this is a great benefit because there is so many people that I hear from time to time say that they have prescription drugs that they no longer need and those type of things. And this is just a good way to dispose of them in a safe manner," said Madison County Sheriff David Woolfork.

The Metro Narcotics Unit has performed four drop offs since 2010 and has collected nearly 450 pounds of drugs. Officials said this event has been the most successful so far.
