Miss Tennessee 2014 Hayley Lewis begins her year
JACKSON, Tenn. -- Miss Tennessee Valley Hayley Lewis now wears the crown of Miss Tennessee 2014.
This wasn't her first time in the state competition, but she said she's changed a lot through the process.
"I went through it with expectations that were completely changed. I realized that I was not the cream of the crop, and I wanted to be, so I pushed myself," explained Lewis.
The Belmont University senior is a Music Business major and involved in Belmont's a cappella group, the Beltones.
She says her collegiate experience helped her take the step onto the pageant stage, as did having a mentor within her college sorority.
"I realized that I not only idolized her for being well spoken, beautiful, and being able to present herself in such a charismatic way, but I really idolized what her genuine heart was all about," said Lewis.
Now she'll take a break for a year from university life to prepare for Miss America, just one of her new responsibilities as Miss Tennessee.
"I'm thrilled to be able to travel the state of Tennessee and get to talk to so many students and also get to visit all the Children's Network funded hospitals," Lewis said.
She explained that it will be a while before the reality of her new title, Miss Tennessee 2014, sets in.
Lewis will now compete in the Miss America pageant in Atlantic City this September.
