Mother Accused of Abusing her Baby
DECATURVILLE, Tenn. – A Decaturville woman was arrested and accused of abusing her child.
According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Felecia Kaye Gray, 27, of Decaturville, was arrested Tuesday and charged with one count of aggravated child abuse and one count of child neglect. Investigators believe that Gray abused her ten-month-old daughter. The child is currently recovering at Vanderbilt Medical Center from the injuries allegedly inflicted on her as a result of the abuse by her mother.
Investigators believe that on January 5, Felecia Gray was home alone with her ten-month-old daughter and 3-year-old son when, out of frustration, Felecia Gray grabbed the baby around her waist and violently put her in a crib.
The next day a family member reportedly noticed the baby was lethargic and was having trouble breathing, and instructed Felecia Gray to take the baby to the doctor. At the continuing insistence of other family members, Felecia Gray carried the baby to the Decatur County General Hospital three days after the incident. Hospital staff contacted authorities after they determined the baby may have been abused.
A news release stated that the child was transferred to Vanderbilt Medical Center where specialists reported the baby suffered from severe compression injuries and spinal injuries from being slammed onto her seat. She suffered several broken ribs, damage to her spine and was malnourished. Her condition is now improving, but she remains in the hospital.
The 24th Judicial District Attorney General requested TBI to investigate the child abuse allegations on January 8, 2013.
As a result of that investigation, Gray was booked into the Decatur County Jail on $10,000 bond.
