The NAACP hosted its 49th Annual Freedom Fund Banquet at the Carl Perkins Civic Center Sunday to honor civil rights activists and those who fought for freedom for all.
More than 450 people attended the banquet which featured live gospel music. The theme this year was "Standing for Freedom and Defending Democracy."
Organizers said they wanted to focus and recognize those who paved the way for for everyone to enjoy freedom in the United States.
"America didn't just happen because people tried to make America truly what America has said on paper. So every freedom that we enjoy today, somebody had to pay a price for," said NAACP's Dr. William Barber.
During the banquet, those in attendance remembered Reverend Elton Cox, one of the original 13 Freedom Riders.
