New App Offers Sex Offender Alerts

JACKSON Tenn. - A new smartphone application that allows users to track sex offenders living in their neighborhood is now available in Tennessee.

AlertID is a free app available for parents to use on their smartphones or online. The app sends push notifications if a sex offender moves in down the street or close-by.

"It's a good idea if you're trying to, like, keep your children away from certain areas. I mean, you never know where these people live." said Mother, Kari Houston

The app is available just in time for Halloween and could possibly give families peace of mind when it comes time for Trick or Treating.

Although sex offenders are legally banned from passing out candy or decorating on the holiday, the app lets parents aware of potentially dangerous stops.

"There are restrictions, but the restrictions only go so far especially with sex offenders." said Houston.

AlertID is currently offered in 18 other states.
