JACKSON, Tenn.- A new group of Jackson fire fighters will soon join the front lines.

16 new hires are now in their second week of training to join the ranks for the Jackson Fire Department.

Once trained, the new firemen will be assigned to various stations around the city. Before they are put out into the field, each of then has to learn about every aspect of firefighting from strategies to hazmat situations.

"We think that giving them the in depth training up front is really critical before we throw them out there to the wolves," said Fire Marshal Wayne Arnold of the Jackson Fire Department.

The fire department expects to hire another group in the coming months to replace firefighters who resign or retire during the year.

The department is also preparing to open and to staff a new fire department location on Windy City Road.
