JACKSON, Tenn.- A long-time fixture near Jackson-Madison County General Hospital is no more.

The convenience store located across from the hospital on West Forest has been demolished.

West Tennessee Healthcare bought the land and building to make way for street improvements. The building removal will eventually allow better access to the planned Kirkland Cancer Center.

The board of trustees recently approved building a new $47.5 million dollar facility to house the Alice and Carl Kirkland Cancer Center.

This will allow cancer patients to be in one central location for treatments. The new cancer center will also include an outside healing garden, a chapel, boutique and a cafe.

The new cancer center is expected to break ground August 24 and will take a little more than a year to complete.
