Pair Accused of Sexually Exploiting Teen Runaway
JACKSON, Tenn. – Two Jackson residents are jailed after they allegedly harbored and sexually exploited a runaway teen.
According to a news release, Monica Starks, 19, and Marquise Chism, 23, are charged with charged with sexual exploitation of a minor and promoting prostitution.
Starks and Chism were arraigned at 8 a.m. Friday in Jackson City Court. Starks' bond was set at $15,000, and Chism's bond was set at $10,000. Their next scheduled court appearance is at 1:30 p.m. June 20 in City Court. Starks is being held in lieu of bond, and Chism has been released on bond from the Madison County Jail.
Investigators said they were looking for a 16-year-old girl who ran away from her home and believe Starks knowingly allowed the girl to stay at her home, on the 400 block of Jackson Street, for an extended period of time. Starks allegedly had knowledge that the girl was a reported runaway.
Investigators said they further learned that Chism is Starks' boyfriend. While the teen was at Starks' house, Starks and Chism are accused of allowing the teen to participate in a sexually explicit video recording. Starks and Chism also allegedly scheduled arrangements for sexual encounters between the teen and adults. During these encounters, police said that money was exchanged for sex.
Starks and Chism were both arrested at Starks' home Thursday morning and transported to the Madison County Jail.
Investigators are attempting to identify the adults who were sexually involved with the teen.
