JACKSON, Tenn.- Jackson Police are investigating after a 16-year-old girl was shot in the leg at a birthday party off of Brentwood Drive.

Police responded to 58 Brentwood Drive around 8:30 p.m. Saturday.
Witnesses said the shooting happened after a fight broke out between two men who were at the party.

"He came out of the house and was wiping his nose like he got beat up then the next thing you know he fired two shots," said witness Ameea Perkins.

Investigators said they believe the teen was an innocent bystander during the argument. Nicole Whitfield who is the Victim's aunt told 7 Eyewitness News that her niece is lucky to be alive.

"Now if young fellows get in a fight and they get whooped they pull out guns and go shoot people," said Whitfield. "We could be planning a funeral right now instead of going to see her in the hospital and I thank God she is okay."

Neighbors said this type of violence is unusual for their neighborhood. Residents said they believe their safety in the city of Jackson is in question.

"Everybody is just sitting on pins and needles even now you know waiting to see what's going to be next, it's just a feeling of tension," said neighbor James Parten.

The victim was transported by private vehicle to the Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. Family members said they believe that gun violence is getting out of control.

"It used to not be like this, every other week when you talk now there is a shooting somewhere and I just pray that our police department can take back control of the streets," said Whitfield.

Police said they have a person of interest but have made no arrests. Anyone with information in this case is asked to call Jackson Police or Crime Stoppers.
