JACKSON, Tenn. -- Jackson police say drugs could have motivated a son to kill his father.

Clayton Nelson will stay behind bars. A Jackson judge denied bond Wednesday for the 29-year-old accused of killing his father, Jeffery Nelson.

“I'm glad to know that they did convince him to surrender and I'm glad that he is off the street,” Gary Cooper said, a neighbor of Jeffery.

Cooper lives on Westwood Avenue, a few doors down from the crime scene. Investigators say they found Jeffrey Nelson’s body on Saturday in the living room, covered with sheets. Clayton faces first degree murder and theft charges.

“Right now all the evidence is pointing toward Clay Nelson,” Capt. Tyreece Miller said.

According to an arrest warrant, the 57-year-old victim’s throat was cut and his head beaten. Investigators say they found a hammer with hair and blood on it and two bloody knives at the scene.

Police say they also found large bloody footprints at the scene, consistent with Converse sneakers Clayton had on at the time of his arrest. Investigators say they believe drugs may have motivated the attack.

“I think drugs are the underlying tone of this, drug use, his use of drugs and what someone will do to get money for drugs,” Capt. Miller said.

The killing shocked neighbors. “Normally this neighborhood is quiet,” Cooper said.

Officers say witnesses told them the suspect talked about his father’s death and that Clayton said he blacked out.

Clayton also told the judge Wednesday he does not work and suffers from a physical disability, but did not say what kind. Clayton also faces charges for reportedly stealing his neighbor’s $800 television. He is scheduled to return to court July 24.
