A Friendship Police Chief is recovering after being shot during an armed robbery late Friday night at the Dollar General Store.

Officials said Bill Garrett was shot in the stomach while struggling with one of the suspects.

"This is not his first encounter. He sees a lot of things like this, and people just don't realize it," said Family Friend, Katie Hicks.

Residents who live close to the Dollar General said there were dozens of cops surrounding the store.

"Helicopters were over my house. You could hear them and the cops. There were 20 to 30 cops at the dollar store and the lights. I heard the man was on the roof but somehow he got off," said Megan Gray.

The Crockett County Sheriff's Department arrested 39-year-old Michael Craig Barbee early Saturday morning.

Deputies said they are looking for another suspect.

Chief Garrett was airlifted to the MED in Memphis.

Residents said he has undergone surgery and is resting well.

"I'm just glad I have the opportunity to tell him thank you because he means so much to people, and they don't realize until something like this happens how important it is to really say thank you to people like Mr. Bill," said Hicks.

The suspect, Barbee has been charged with 1st degree attempted murder.
